Abstract

In this report we track the key elements of Victoria’s energy transition from 1989-90 to 2019-20, with a focus on the period from 2004-05 to 2019-20. The benchmark year for our emission reduction targets is 2005. We look at how energy consumption has changed in the different economic sectors, how the electricity and natural gas production and distribution systems are changing, and how energy-related greenhouse gas emissions are changing in the wider context of our overall emissions. This new report builds on a series of reports that Sustainability Victoria has prepared over the last 5 years for internal use. A key difference is that the data has been analysed from the perspective of the energy transition that is now well underway. The report has expanded to cover the transition of both the electricity and gas systems, and this is the start of a report series. Updated editions will be published each year as new energy and greenhouse data becomes available, and as government policies and targets change.
