Fund recipients

 Announcement date: May 2025

Recipients received funding to establish asbestos disposal point to provide safe, local disposal option for small quantities of correctly packaged, non-friable (bonded) asbestos waste. On site, the waste will be temporarily stored in a fit for purpose bin, prior to being transported to an EPA Victoria licensed landfill for final disposal.

The development and operation of the asbestos disposal points will be informed by Sustainability Victoria’s pilot program. Technical specialists, EPA Victoria, WorkSafe Victoria and other stakeholder groups were consulted during the development of the pilot. The program has successfully tested the infrastructure, systems, standard operating procedures and communication resources needed to manage the safe disposal of asbestos.

Recipients will work through several stages to ensure all the necessary regulatory requirements are met before the transfer stations can start accepting asbestos. This includes planning and environmental approval processes with the relevant authorities, and ensuring the supporting infrastructure, systems and training is in place to manage asbestos safely.
