Funding to improve the management and recovery of hazardous waste

Sustainability Victoria is announcing further grants, with $9.7 million available to support hazardous waste infrastructure projects.

Hazardous waste is the hazardous by-product of everyday goods and services. As of 1 July 2021, hazardous waste is classified as reportable priority waste under Victoria’s environment protection laws and new permissions apply. The Recycling Victoria Infrastructure Fund – Hazardous Waste Stream (Round 2) supports infrastructure projects that target low-level contaminated soils and prescribed industrial waste.

Refer to the Environment Protection Authority’s classifications for prescribed industrial waste to determine wastes classified as reportable priority waste.

Recycling Victoria Infrastructure Fund – Hazardous Waste Stream (Round 2)

Funding is available to businesses (local and international) and local governments that have existing facilities in Victoria, or are proposing to build a new facility in Victoria, for infrastructure to manage or recover low-level contaminated soils or reportable priority waste.

Projects must meet one or more of the following objectives:

• Increase the recovery and local reprocessing of hazardous waste, and to manage this material in line with the waste hierarchy.
• Increase the use and quality of recycled materials for remanufacturing and to make new products.
• Increase economic development opportunities such as jobs, economic performance and growth of hubs.

About Recycling Victoria

This grant is part of Recycling Victoria, the Victorian Government’s circular economy investment and action plan of more than $300 million will drive a fundamental shift in our economy towards waste reduction and using resources to their full potential.

The Recycling Victoria Infrastructure Fund aims to provide funding for infrastructure targeting priority materials, such as paper and cardboard, plastic, glass and hazardous solvent waste.

The fund assists businesses to improve the quality of materials recovered and increase the capacity and capability of Victoria’s resource recovery sector.
