The Victorian organics industry is experiencing rapid growth. Through kerbside reform and improved recovery of commercial and industry waste, there is an increasing supply of organic waste and a need to use this waste productively.

There’s an opportunity to address this and improve the way we use recycled organics in products such as soil conditioners, soil blends and mulches. Innovations with these products could result in more jobs, added industry value to the economy and reducing more CO2 annually (Australian Organics Recycling Association, 2021).

Funding now available to meet increasing market demand

The Research and Development Fund – Organics will support research organisations and industry to improve existing recycled organics product, process and system performance. The aim is to build a resilient organics market.

$1.6 million is available for research and development projects that will grow the market and enhance the value and performance of existing recycled organic products. These projects must have strong commercial feasibility in the next 2 to 3 years.

Successful recipients will be supported to research and test viability and real-world applications with industry. Industry has a unique opportunity to influence the development of enhanced organics products, finding evidence-based solutions and being some of the first to adopt their use.

Applications close 16 July 2021.

To find out more about this funding opportunity register for our information session on Thursday 10 June 2021.

Transforming Victoria’s recycling system

The funding is offered through the Victorian Government's policy, Recycling Victoria. The policy will fundamentally boost jobs and establish a recycling system Victorians can rely on.

The Victorian Government has invested over $515 million to deliver the biggest transformation and reform of Victoria’s waste and recycling industry. This includes $380 million to deliver Recycling Victoria.

Projects supported through this fund will form an important piece of the circular economy puzzle: increasing efficacy and usefulness of recycled organics to ensure we are getting more value from our resources.
