Anika Legal is a finalist for a Community Champion award in the Premier's Sustainability Awards – Social and economic justice category. COVID-19 Renters' Rights
Anika Legal is a youth-led, not-for-profit social enterprise reducing barriers to entry for legal help. The team helps Victorian renters stay in safe homes, providing free, online legal assistance.
Vulnerable renters are paired with law students, who help them secure rent reductions by preparing letters to their landlords seeking compassion based on their circumstances.
To date, the initiative has helped 85 people experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19 negotiate a rent reduction, with an average reduction of 18-30%.
