Delicious apple berry crumble

Use up apples and fresh or frozen berries in this delicious fruit crumble. If you don't have spare berries, it can be made just with apples.

Delicious apple berry crumble




Ingredients

4 apples, peeled, cored and diced
180g berries, e.g. blackberries, raspberries, strawberries
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp caster (superfine) sugar
175g (1½ cups) plain (all purpose) flour
85g (⅓ cup) polyunsaturated spread (or butter if you prefer)
3 tbsp sugar
25g (¼ cup) rolled oats

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 190°C (170° fan). Grease 4 individual baking dishes (can also be made in one large dish).
  2. Toss the apples and berries in the lemon juice, cinnamon and caster sugar and divide between the baking dishes.
  3. Put the flour into a mixing bowl and rub in the softened spread or butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, then stir in the sugar and oats.
  4. Sprinkle evenly over the fruit and bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and the apples are tender.

Tip: Try using different fruits depending on what you have on hand. Peaches, pears, apricots, rhubarb and plums all make fantastic substitutes.

Leftovers: Extra filling can be frozen for another time but freezing with the crumble topping already added is not recommended.
