Delicious apple berry crumble
4 apples, peeled, cored and diced
180g berries, e.g. blackberries, raspberries, strawberries
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp caster (superfine) sugar
175g (1½ cups) plain (all purpose) flour
85g (⅓ cup) polyunsaturated spread (or butter if you prefer)
3 tbsp sugar
25g (¼ cup) rolled oats
- Heat the oven to 190°C (170° fan). Grease 4 individual baking dishes (can also be made in one large dish).
- Toss the apples and berries in the lemon juice, cinnamon and caster sugar and divide between the baking dishes.
- Put the flour into a mixing bowl and rub in the softened spread or butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, then stir in the sugar and oats.
- Sprinkle evenly over the fruit and bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and the apples are tender.
Tip: Try using different fruits depending on what you have on hand. Peaches, pears, apricots, rhubarb and plums all make fantastic substitutes.
Leftovers: Extra filling can be frozen for another time but freezing with the crumble topping already added is not recommended.
