Asbestos Disposal Point Pilot – Funded projects
The Asbestos Disposal Point (ADP)* pilot program was funded through the government’s circular economy policy, Recycling Victoria: a new economy.
Grants supported the establishment of up to 3 asbestos transfer sites, to trial the infrastructure and services needed to safely receive, manage, and dispose of waste asbestos. The pilot informed the establishment of an asbestos disposal network composed of existing licensed landfills and new short-term asbestos storage and transfer sites.
The program objectives were to:
- enable safe management of asbestos
- increase access to disposal options for small quantities of packaged asbestos
- trial the Operational Support Package (OSP) and Communications Support Package (CSP) that underpin the development and ongoing operation of an ADP
- collect data and information
- inform the roll-out of further sites and strengthen the evidence base for safe disposal of asbestos into the future.
*Please note: 'asbestos disposal points’ were previously referred to as ‘asbestos transfer sites’.
Fund recipients
Announcement date: 1 August 2023.
Recipients received funding to pilot an asbestos disposal point to trial the infrastructure and systems needed to safely receive, manage, and dispose of waste asbestos.
The pilots will provide a safe, local disposal option for small quantities of correctly packaged, non-friable (bonded) asbestos waste. On site, the waste will be temporarily stored in a fit for purpose bin, prior to being transported to the landfill cell for final disposal.
