Biomass opportunities in Victoria

Led by Sustainability Victoria, the Victorian Organics Resource Recovery Strategy, has a key action to ‘identify locations and volumes of available biomass across regional Victoria’. Harnessing sustainable sources of biomass is key to producing sustainable bioenergy.

The Victorian Government’s goal is to divert organic material from landfill and harness the power of renewable energy to stabilise and drive down prices, attract billions of dollars of investment and create thousands of local jobs.

The state has renewable energy targets of 25 per cent by 2020 and 40 per cent by 2025.

The Australian Biomass for Bioenergy Assessment (ABBA)

ABBA is funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and its purpose is to identify biomass resources for bioenergy across Australia to catalyse investment in the renewable energy sector.

SV is producing the Victorian segment of the national project and we are populating data from across commercial and industrial sectors for Victoria.

Victorian Biomass Assessment – Sector and Regional profiles

The Victorian Biomass Assessment (from ABBA) regional profiles are extracts of the ABBA national project. The profiles reveal the estimated quantities of biomass availability (sustainable yield) for each of Victoria's regions for bioenergy or other higher value products.

Bioenergy Infrastructure Fund grants

Over $700,000 in grant funding is being invested in bioenergy technology. This includes funding equipment, infrastructure and support for technical and feasibility studies.

This grant opened in 2019 and recipients have now been awarded, with projects to be completed by October 2020.

Data access

The data generated by the Australian Biomass for Bioenergy Assessment (ABBA) program has been refined over a few data acquisition periods. The latest dataset is available on the AREMI platform as well as here on our own Interactive Data Portal:

To see the entire suite of over 40 industry based biomass datasets and map overlays with other related infrastructure visit the AREMI portal and, after agreeing to terms of entry, select Add Data and look up Renewable energy > Bioenergy > Victoria. From here you will find the sector-specific biomass data.
