Building design

Buildings have an enormous impact on our well-being, our environment and our financial bottom line.

  • 90% of our life is typically spent inside buildings. Their design, systems, materials and operations directly affect our health and productivity. Studies by Sustainability Victoria (SV) and others show that significant benefits to people's well being and productivity in excess of 5% can be achieved.
  • 23% of green house gas emissions in Australia are attributable to buildings. Multiple research reports have demonstrated that the built environment is the most cost effective sector for improvements to our green house gas footprint (McKinsey, CIE).
  • 40% of waste to landfill is typically generated by construction and demolition. Leading commercial construction projects supported by SV demonstrate that more than 90% of this resource can be diverted from landfill and reused or recycled.
  • 13% improvement of asset value can be achieved by independently verified sustainable buildings in the leading sub-sectors. They show significantly lower operating costs, higher returns and stronger market performance.

SV partners with industry, all levels of government and households to tap into this enormous potential. We analyse gaps, support leading exemplars and encourage broad scale uptake of proven feasible measures strategies. Our objective is a healthy, sustainable and efficient built environment in Victoria.
