Victorian Government's Litter Strategy
The 2009 Victorian Litter strategy, Creating Cleaner, Safer Places - Working together to remove litter from Victoria's environment, outlines where we've come from, what we have achieved and what we need to do, setting out a vision for how we can get there together. It represents the next step in litter prevention and management and sets the direction to help Victoria achieve its commitments.
The objectives of the Litter Strategy are to:
- prevent litter
- improve litter management practices
- meet the Towards Zero Waste target to improve littering behaviours by 25% by 2014, compared to 2003 levels
achieve clean and safe public places.
Issues paper and background paper
The Litter Strategy Issues Paper was developed to assist the Victorian Government to develop a new litter strategy. A Background Paper to this provided more detailed information on all of the material covered.
Victorian Litter Strategy Draft Action Plan 2010-14
The Litter Strategy Draft Action Plan is currently being finalised and will outline the activities to be undertaken over the next four years to implement the Litter Strategy. It is a coordinated statewide approach to improving litter prevention and management and focuses on an integrated approach to education, infrastructure and enforcement, supported by ongoing monitoring and evaluation.
The Litter Strategy Action plan is led by Sustainability Victoria and developed in partnership with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria and the Victorian Litter Action Alliance (VLAA).
In March 2010 the Victorian Government announced $6 million funding to implement five key initiatives from the Litter Strategy. The initiatives are:
- improved public place recycling
- roadside litter prevention
- litter prevention officers
- litter behaviour change campaign
- improved litter measurement.
