Our Organisational Culture

At Sustainability Victoria we recognise that our organisational culture is integral to all that we are working to achieve, and that everybody in our organisation has a role to play in building and maintaining a constructive culture.

A constructive culture is one where people are supportive and encouraging of one other and where open, honest and timely conversations happen.  It is one centred around achieving high quality results and encouraging innovation.

An appetite for learning is apparent as part of a constructive culture and everyone works cooperatively together and feels like part of the team.  We began a journey to focus on our organisational culture in 2007, and this journey is continuing today.

Demonstrating our core value of action

Below are some examples of our work from the three functional streams - Sustainable Environs, Sustainable Living and Sustainable Production.

Sustainable Environs

  • SV is managing Zero Emissions Neighbourhoods (ZEN) - a new Victorian Government initiative to shape the sustainable future of new residential developments.
    Find out more at www.resourcesmart.vic.gov.au/zen
  • Launch of Cityswitch Green Office Campaign.
    Find out more at www.resourcesmart.vic.gov.au/for_businesses/existing_commercial_2097.html
  • As part of Sustainability Victoria's Smart Energy Zones program, six new projects were launched early July 2009. These projects will demonstrate that integrated demand-supply energy solutions can reduce community energy consumption and carbon emissions. Bringing energy generation closer to the community helps foster engagement, increasing awareness and potential uptake of sustainable behaviours.
    The projects are:
    • VicUrban
    • Banyule City Council
    • Manningham City Council
    • Boroondara City Council
    • CERES
    • Department of Human Services
There are also two existing projects:
    • Moreland Solar City
    • Central Victorian Solar Cities

Sustainable Production

  • Carbon Down is a 3 year partnership Sustainability Victoria signed with VECCI to reduce the carbon footprint of SMEs.
  • Towards Zero Waste is an ongoing 10 year plan targeting 25% reduction in litter behaviour based on 2003 levels by 2014. This Commercial and Industrial Funding Program will deliver over 240,000 tonnes of materials diverted from landfill and nearly 36,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas savings for a total cost of over $1.2 million.

  • Green Skills: The Energy Efficiency team identifies, develops and delivers the training required for the delivery of SV's programs. A green skills strategy will be developed in late 2009 that defines SV's role in the training and accreditation space and provides a process to identify, develop and deliver the training needs across the organisation and ensure alignment with newly emerging policy at both state and national level.

Sustainable Living

  • The Energy and Water Task Force improves the energy and water efficiency of the homes of disadvantaged Victorians. It aims to:
    • improve home comfort
    • reduce energy and water bills
    • increase job opportunities for unemployed Victorian

To date around 5500 homes have received a free energy and water retrofit, resulting in gas bills reduced by 16% and electricity by 9% on average. Find out more about the Energy and Water Taskforce

  • ResourceSmart Schools facilitates primary and secondary schools to embed systemic sustainability actions into the whole school approach, including student learning outcomes, school operations and community partnerships.  Currently 25% of all Victorian schools are participating.
    Components include:
    • ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic Core module-60 new schools per year
    • ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic Waste module-30 new schools per year
    • ResourceSmart Awards

Our Objectives

At Sustainability Victoria we have identified the seven key strategic goals listed below in our Strategic Plan:

  1. Encourage business, communities and government to make more sustainable choices.
  2. Create capacity for sustainable products and services.
  3. Grow the supply of energy from diverse renewable energy sources.
  4. Influence the sustainability performance and use of new and existing buildings.
  5. Encourage sustainable precincts and communities.
  6. Create capacity and demand for 'green collar' jobs.
  7. Strengthen our organisation.

These goals summarise what SV specifically is setting out to achieve in this now busy space.  All projects and programs, position descriptions and individual performance plans at SV are positioned in terms of their relevance to one or more of these goals.   The result is a clear alignment of all individuals' roles and responsibilities to SV's strategic plan.
