Victorian Government
Victoria's Environmental Sustainability Framework, launched in April 2005, identified key strategic directions for all government agencies. All departments and agencies are to include these ESF directions into business and operational planning.
Following the Framework, the Sustainability Action Statement, launched in July 2006, is a key step for government to operationalise sustainability in its activities and programs.
The ten Victorian Government departments have utilised environmental management systems within their office facilities since 2003. An independent audit of the program conducted by the Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability verified the following results for 2006-2007:
- Energy consumption per square metre decreased by 9%.
- Waste production per full time equivalent staff person ("FTE") decreased by 13%.
- Water consumption per FTE decreased by 21%, following a considerable focus on water conservation activities across Agencies.
- Paper consumption per FTE decreased by 7%.
- Targets of an overall 15 per cent increase in energy efficiency between 1999-2000 and 2005-06, and 10% of electricity to be purchased as GreenPower by 2006 were achieved.
The Sustainability Action Statement includes an additional strategic direction around government leadership commitments. Action 16.1 commits the government to expanding environmental management programs into statutory agencies.
