Sustainability Accord

Round Three of the Local Sustainability Accord Announced

Councils from across Victoria will benefit from more than $1.3 million dollars in funding for local sustainability projects as part of Round Three of the Victorian Local Sustainability Accord program, funded by the Sustainability Fund.

In addition eight rural councils will receive $30,000 each to assist in developing environment strategies.

Funding of up to $5 million over three years was committed to fund from the Sustainability Fund for projects undertaken as part of the Accord program through Our Environment, Our Future Sustainability Action Statement 2006.

Congratulations to the following councils on their successful projects

  • City of Ballarat - Managing biodiversity in your backyard
  • Hindmarsh Shire Council - Development of the Wimmera Mallee Sustainability Alliance.
  • City of Warrnambool- Development of a sustainable planning framework for regional Victoria. .
  • Moorabool Shire Council - Creating environmentally sensitive planning tools for use by rural councils on Melbourne's fringe.
  • Ararat Rural City Council - Bio-energy plant feasibility study
  • Gannawarra Shire Council - Living green in Gannawarra and surrounds
  • Mitchell Shire Council - Regional community sustainability workshops
  • City of Wangaratta - Roadside biodiversity partnership program
  • City of Whitehorse - Evaluation of local government behaviour change programs
  • Shire of Yarra Ranges - Examining the impacts of climate change on bushland and biodiversity.
  • City of Casey - Protecting the Western Port community from the impacts of climate change.

The Sustainability Fund is designed to support projects that foster sustainable resource use and have economic and social benefits for Victorians.

Projects supported by the fund are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from dairy farms, establish recycling systems in high-rise apartments, create parklands from old landfill sites, conduct research into solar powered rail, deliver sustainability workshops for small business and reduce energy use from domestic water heating and air-conditioning. The Fund also supports sustainability projects in Neighbourhood Renewal Areas, projects outlined in the Environmental Sustainability Action Statement (ESAS) and projects in partnership with local councils through the Sustainability Accord.

About the Sustainability Accord

The Sustainability Accord is a partnership between the Victorian Government and Victorian Councils that aims to foster consistent development of environment and sustainability policies and programs.

Expressions of Interest for Round Three of the Sustainability Accord have now closed. Full applications are due 30 April 2008, 3.00pm. Applications available from the DSE website.

The Sustainability Fund supports projects at Victorian Councils through the Sustainability Accord. These Projects, managed by the Department of Sustainability and Environment, include:

  • Bendigo City Council - Reclamation of Mine Despoiled Sites in Bendigo
  • Buloke Shire Council - Central Victorian Councils Reaching for Renewables and Running on Biodiesel
  • Darebin City Council - NAGA 2006-09 Public Lighting Action Program
  • Hobsons Bay City Council - Kororoit Creek: a structure for implementing sustainable catchment management
  • Moorabool Shire Council - Land & Biodiversity Asset Mapping
  • Moreland City Council - Sustainability Assessment in the Planning Process
  • Moyne Shire Council - Land capability & biodiversity study, incorporating a planning scheme overlay for Moyne Shire
  • Nillumbik Shire Council - Development of a Masterplan: Edendale Farm Community Environment Centre
