Smart Energy Zones
The opportunity
The Victorian Government, through Sustainability Victoria, is seeking partners to show how communities can cut their greenhouse emissions with a combination of energy solutions.
Smart Energy Zones will demonstrate the benefits of integrating multiple technologies in one location, for greater energy efficiency and security.
A zone could include:
- Local energy generation, including cogeneration and small scale renewables
- Micro-grids for distributing electricity, heating and cooling
- Energy efficiency measures
- Smart meters
- Energy storage
- Innovative electricity tariffs
A Smart Energy Zone can be established in a greenfield development or incorporated into the redevelopment of an existing area.
Showing The Way
The significant contribution that local communities can make to meet their own energy needs is largely untapped and comes with a host of benefits for consumers, governments and business:
Greenhouse pollution abatement
Integrating demand and sustainable energy supply will slash greenhouse gas emissions.
Distributed generation
Surplus energy can be put back into the grid and contribute to the sustainability of our urban infrastructure.
Generating community demand
Demonstrates that combining innovative energy technologies delivers secure, clean, renewable power to local communities.
Driving change
Establishes a model for communities across Victoria to follow.
Influencing policy
Informing the development of policy and regulatory frameworks to accelerate the uptake of sustainable development.
Level of investment
The Victorian Government will invest $4 million over four years in Smart Energy Zones.
Sustainability Victoria will help identify opportunities for innovation in project concepts, and will work with you to build the business case for sustainability within your project.
