Wind resources in Victoria

Victoria has access to world class wind resources.

View Victoria's wind resources on an interactive map.

The appropriate development of these resources in acceptable locations will position Victoria to develop a significant renewable energy industry. We are working across government to create an attractive investment environment to accelerate the appropriate development of Victoria's wind resources.

Key: Average Yearly Wind Speed (metres per second at 65 metres above ground)

Wind legend

Average annual wind speeds have been modelled using the WindScape wind resource mapping tool that was developed by the Wind Energy Research Unit of CSIRO Land and Water. WindScape uses atmospheric data, and regional topography to model the wind resource at 65 metres above ground level to a resolution of 3 kilometres. The resolution of the modelled wind resource means that it does not incorporate the effects of local landscape features smaller than 3 kilometres in size, like small hills and ridges.

Report released on greenhouse gas emissions

Wind is an effective way for Victoria to cut greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity generation. An independent study by McLennan Magasanik Associates quantifies how much fossil fuel generation is displaced by Victorian wind farms. This study has been recently updated and an independent review of the work has been completed by the University of New South Wales.
