Wind resources in Victoria

Victoria has access to world class wind resources.

View Victoria's wind resources on an interactive map.

The appropriate development of these resources in acceptable locations will position Victoria to develop a significant renewable energy industry. We are working across government to create an attractive investment environment to accelerate the appropriate development of Victoria's wind resources.

Key: Average Yearly Wind Speed (metres per second at 65 metres above ground)

Wind legend

Average annual wind speeds have been modelled using the WindScape wind resource mapping tool that was developed by the Wind Energy Research Unit of CSIRO Land and Water. WindScape uses atmospheric data, and regional topography to model the wind resource at 65 metres above ground level to a resolution of 3 kilometres. The resolution of the modelled wind resource means that it does not incorporate the effects of local landscape features smaller than 3 kilometres in size, like small hills and ridges.

Wind energy -
myths and facts

Victoria's energy demand is growing by over one and a half percent each year and the level of greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels is continuing to increase. Renewable energy is helping to meet our demand without producing additional greenhouse emissions.

The Victorian Government encourages the development of renewable energy through a range of policy initiatives including the Victorian Renewable Energy Target scheme. This scheme has triggered new investment in renewable energy projects including wind, which is one of the most cost effective and fastest growing sources of renewable energy worldwide.

The Victorian Government supports wind energy generation in appropriate locations and has developed planning guidelines for wind developments.

As wind energy projects are proposed in various regions across the State, more Victorians are being introduced to wind farms in their communities. While wind power is well-proven and widely used around the world, it is a relatively new technology in Australia and the subject of much discussion and debate.

A number of myths exist, some based on old technologies and some on misunderstandings, in relation to wind farms and:

  • greenhouse gas reductions
  • reliability
  • costs
  • community benefits
  • noise
  • birds and livestock
  • community support and location
  • safety

This publication separates the myths from the facts and explains the importance of wind energy in helping Victoria make the transition to a low carbon future. Download Download SV_WindEnergy.pdf Wind energy - myths and facts (1.21MB).
