Who can use the service?

The service is free and available to all Victorian householders. Businesses of any sort are ineligible to use the service. Businesses wishing to dispose of unwanted chemicals should contact a chemical waste service provider (details of these can be found in the Yellow Pages).

What can I take to the drop off facilities?

Paints, motor oil, fluorescent tubes, gas/BBQ cylinders, and all types of batteries (car batteries, ordinary household batteries and mobile phone batteries).

What will not be accepted?

All other household chemicals. For information about other ways of disposing of household hazardous waste, please see the Household Chemical Collection Timetable or Alternative Disposal Options for Chemicals.

What happens to materials after collection?

All materials collected are taken to processing facilities. Paint is recovered for use as fuel, oil is recycled into low grade diesel, mercury from fluoro tubes is recovered for reuse whilst the glass is recycled, and all metals from batteries, paint cans etc are recycled back into new steel products. Lead, sulphuric acid, cadmium, and zinc found in batteries are also recovered for reuse.

Tips

  • Observe safe lifting procedures. Use the leg muscles, not the back.
  • Ensure liquids such as paint and oil are transported in non leaking containers and are all clearly labelled and that gas cylinders have been screwed shut.
