Widespread acceptance of the need to act to reduce human impact on the planet thrust our core business into the mainstream this year. Together with governments, industry, schools, community groups and everyday Victorians, we played a pivotal role in raising the profile of and taking major steps towards securing a sustainable future.
Our shared efforts helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than one million tonnes. And we are now working to cut 10 million tonnes of greenhouse pollution by 2010.
This year's Annual Report captures a year of great change. It is an open account of our own successes, the successes of others, and the challenges of our fast emerging sector.

Sustainability Victoria Annual Report 2005-2006
The following Annual Report details the performance of Sustainability Victoria for the 2005-2006 financial year. In October 2005, EcoRecycle Victoria and the Sustainable Energy Authority Victoria merged to form Sustainability Victoria.
Showing the way to a sustainable future
By integrating Victoria's response to the three key sustainability challenges of energy, water and materials, our work is critical to achieving the goals of the Victorian Government's sustainability framework, Our Environment, Our Future.
We have identified and work to three key strategic directions:
- Engaging Victorians to help them understand the priority of the environmental challenge and show them how they can take action to make a difference.
- Transforming markets to ensure industries think differently about energy, materials and water use, and consider the long-term as well as short-term profitability of their operations.
- Making connections in Victoria, Australia and around the world that help us address the sustainability challenge.
While it has been less than a year since our formation, we are already having a positive impact on Victoria's future.

EcoRecycle Victoria - Annual Report 2004-2005
Since 1996, over 29 million tonnes of resources have been recovered for recycling, generating considerable environmental benefits for Victoria.
2004-2005 saw the further development of Sustainability in Action: Towards Zero Waste Strategy. This strategy aims to create a materials efficient Victoria, where waste generation is greatly reduced, resources are used more efficiently and waste disposal at landfill is seen as a last resort.
We are recycling more than ever before, and have moved from recycling 26% of our waste stream in 1993 to 53% in 2003-04, showing that Victorians have moved from waste to resource-focused communities and businesses. Our collective challenge, through the new agency Sustainability Victoria, is to continue to reduce resource use and to reach a sustainable standard of living.
