Best practice guide for waste management in multi-unit developments

Across Victoria there has been a steady increase in the number of multi-unit developments (MUDs), particularly in many of Melbourne's inner urban and middle suburban areas.

Unfortunately, resource recovery from MUDs is not currently equal to the success achieved from kerbside services to single dwelling domestic households, which can divert more than 50% of their waste from landfill.

As the number of MUDs is only likely to increase with Victoria's growing population, it is important that the principles of best practice waste management are incorporated into all new developments.

In response, Sustainability Victoria has developed the draft Best Practice Guide for Waste Management in Multi-unit Developments to assist council staff, architects, residential developers and building management incorporate best practice in the design, establishment, operation and ongoing management of waste services in MUDs. It outlines various essential points to be considered when designing a waste management system for medium or high-density residential, mixed-use and integrated housing developments.

Consultation and submissions

A period for public submissions was open from 10 to 30 November 2009, and during this time, a stakeholder forum was organised by the Metropolitan Waste Management Group. The forum was well attended and a wide range of issues was discussed, including planning for and servicing waste management in MUDs.

The draft guidelines are now being revised taking into account comments made in submissions and at the forum. The final best practice guide is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2010.
