FirstRate5 Accreditation

A brochure on becoming a Thermal Performance Assessor is available through Sustainability Victoria or your Registered Training Organisation.

The accreditation process details are also provided below.

Step 1 - Proficiency in the use of Second Generation software eg. FirstRate5

To become an accredited FirstRate5 assessor you must first enrol in a Short Course in Building Thermal Performance Assessment (Residential). These courses are offered in partnership with accredited training providers state-wide.

Please note that course structure and costs vary between providers.

For a list of training providers and their contact details, go to FirstRate Training Providers.

Step 2 - Pass training and assessments

Prospective Thermal Performance Assessors must successfully complete training and its associated assessments with a registered training provider. The training provider will issue a Statement of Attainment on successful completion of the course.

Step 3 - Purchase a copy of FirstRate5

The software and user manual are available for purchase from SV for $550 (including GST).

Step 4 - Apply for accreditation in Victoria

Following successful completion of the Short Course in Building Thermal Performance Assessment, assessors should apply to one of the Accrediting Organisations for accreditation, if they wish to certify plans. Those applying to ABSA for Accreditation will be required to pass a further exam, which gives them national certification.

View the list of Accrediting Organisations and their contact details here.

Step 5 - Annual rating checks

Each year Accredited Thermal Performance Assessors must be prepared to forward software files and plans for check testing by their Accrediting Organisation as part of random checking of energy ratings. The number of checks varies with the volume of ratings and where self-certification of designs is undertaken.

Step 6 - Continuing Professional Development

All accredited assessors are expected to complete a minimum requirement for Continuing Professional Development. Advanced workshops and training are available.

For more information on workshops and training for CPD, please contact your Accrediting Organisation.
