Sustainable water initiatives in Victoria

The Water Industry has been identified by the CSIRO as one of the sectors most at risk from climate change - other sectors in danger include forestry, tourism and agriculture. The CSIRO predicts that between 10 and 15 per cent of currently available water will be eliminated permanently from all water authorities over the next 20 years as a result of climate change.

The Victorian Water Industry is a key consumer of electricity being amongst the top 20 businesses in the State.  In 2004-2005 it was responsible for more than 800,000 tonnes of greenhouse pollution. In addition, energy consumption of this industry is predicted to increase by 50% from 1990 levels by 2012.

Opportunities currently exist with renewable energy potential and biosolids recycling. The Victorian Water Industry currently hosts more than 70% of the renewable energy capacity in the State and it has been identified that a potential further 25 MW of mini-hydro could be installed. The Victorian Water Industry is also currently stock-piling two million tonnes of biosolids around Victoria. This represents an untapped resource.

We work with the Victorian water industry towards common goals including:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated by the water industry. A discussion paper is currently under development with the water industry that will address this issue.
  • Increasing capacity for renewable energy generation through water infrastructure and by-products, including hydro and biogas from sewerage treatment plants
  • Facilitating the increase of opportunities for biosolids recycling

We also contribute to ongoing discussions and initiatives in the water industry to assist in the development of a sustainable future for the water industry.
