Business Plan 2007-2010
The challenge ahead
Our long term social and economic wellbeing depends on a secure natural environment but at the moment:
- Australia remains the highest producer of greenhouse pollution per capita in the world;
- We are among the most wasteful nations producing more than 2000kg of waste per person per year;
- We consume more water in households than any other nation; and
- Our Ecological footprint is more than four times sustainable levels.
Understanding these challenges focuses our actions. Our energy, waste and water programs are steering us towards a low carbon future and zero waste. We aim to:
- Reduce greenhouse pollution by 10 million tonnes by 2010 as part of our long term abatement objectives; and
- Reduce solid waste going to landfill to 3.81 million tonnes by 2010, with 63 per cent by weight recovered for reuse, recycling or energy generation.
The challenge is great but our programs are already working to change the way Victorians act. In our first year our programs contributed to:
- 1 million tonne reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
- 2.7 billion megajoules of energy saved
- 1.1million megajoules of renewable energy generated
- 10,000 tonnes of waste avoided
- 650,000 tonnes of material recycled
