ResourceSmart Schools Awards

The ResourceSmart Schools Awards are Victoria's largest sustainability awards program celebrating the achievements of schools and early childhood services.

 

The 2015 ResourceSmart Education Awards ceremony was held on Wednesday 14 October at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Wharf.

Sustainability Victoria is proud to deliver the ResourceSmart Education Awards, celebrating the imaginative and inspiring actions of schools and early childhood centres around Victoria, whose activities are contributing to a healthier, more sustainable state as well as some great educational outcomes for Victoria’s young people.

 

Winners and finalists

The 2015 ResourceSmart School of the Year

Winters Flat is an impressive leader in education for a sustainable future, embedding sustainability in their curriculum and engaging students’, parents and the broader community. They embed sustainability into their curriculum and engage students, parents and the broader community. Their student-led action team ‘Eco Kids - Community Leaders’, engages students from grades 3 to 6, who lead on events and activities to create a sustainable school. Leaders attend conferences, workshops and community meetings to improve their understanding of environmental impacts while developing their presentation skills. The students also have nude food every day and don't send any organic matter to landfill.

“It is through programs like ResourceSmart Schools that moments like this occur,” explained Jeanette McMahon, ResourceSmart Primary Teacher of the Year – Winters Flat Primary School. “Our students are empowered, feel listened to and have the support and help to take action. It provides rich and real opportunities for the students to be change makers.”

The local mayor, Cr Christine Henderson, attended Winters Flat Primary School following the awards event. She was impressed with the student leadership, passion, knowledge, ideas and awareness. The 2015 Awards program

The awards recognise Victorian early childhood services, primary and high schools, students, educators and teachers for their outstanding achievements across various areas of sustainability. Cash and prizes up were up for grabs, along with a fantastic opportunity to share schools sustainability achievements and play a role in inspiring other schools during the student-led presentations.
