Passionate sustainability coordinator thinks big

RSSA 2013 Teacher of the year Stephanie Searls 300x300

In her role as Sustainability Coordinator, Stephanie Searls has been a driving force in sustainability at Alkira Secondary College and has worked to engage the whole school in activities.

She has established the Alkira Planeteers, a student action group that has increased in size from 30 to 72 students within a year.

“Since the moment Miss Searls entered our school with her brillant ideas and connections we saw a big change in our school enviroment and the students way of thinking about making a better planet and preserving the earth for generations to come.” - Student

One of Stephanie’s many successes at school has been developing strong relationships with the local council and nursery to secure plants for events including National Tree Planting Day.

Stephanie worked hard to establish a herb and vegetable garden for the school canteen to use. She encouraged parents, staff and students to help in the creation of the gardens after school and organised a working bee to plant seedlings.

She engaged teachers and created lessons for a whole school curriculum to educate students about the school environment and indigenous flora species.

Stephanie has created a strong culture of sustainability at school, overseeing all initiatives and celebrating achievements, no matter how big or small.

Through her passion and commitment, she has engaged the school community and changed the day to day approach students and teachers have towards sustainability.
