How to dispose of fluorescent lights

Unbroken fluorescent lights can be recycled.

When your Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) or fluorescent tubes stop working they can be recycled. Visit the Fluorocycle website to find out where and how this can be done.

Breakage

Broken fluorescent lights

Fluorescent lights contain a very small amount of mercury inside the glass tube, so if you accidentally break one, it needs to be disposed of correctly.

You should:

  • Turn off your heating and cooling
  • Open doors and windows to naturally ventilate the room
  • Carefully sweep it up wearing disposable rubber gloves
  • Wrap it in paper and dispose of it in your rubbish bin
