Energy efficient appliances will save you money over the lifetime of the appliance compared to standard models. This is why the Smarter Choice Retail Program exists – to help you make better choices when buying new appliances, hardware and lighting.
The program has information available in over 400 partnering stores to help you compare the running costs and environmental performance of the products you're looking to buy.
You can also get expert advice on how to correctly dispose of your old appliances, which can save you money and conserve Victoria's valuable energy and water resources.
Save on household bills
By buying more energy and water efficient appliances, you can both reduce your household bills and help the environment.
Compare models with the same star rating by using the numbers on the water and energy efficiency rating labels. Every extra star will save you 30% on dishwashers, 25% on washing machines and dryers, and 20% on TVs and fridges when it comes to running costs.
Energy consumption score and star rating
Energy Rating Labels are an Australian Government requirement on new appliances, making it easy to compare running costs. The lower the energy consumption score, the less electricity the appliance uses, and the cheaper it will be to run.
TVs, refrigerators/freezers and air conditioners are rated from one to ten stars. Dishwashers, washing machines and dryers are rated from one to six stars.
