Commercial and industrial solar water heaters
Domestic solar thermal systems are commonly used for providing hot water in residential homes.
Another promising use for solar thermal systems is for commercial and small industrial applications for:
- multi-family houses
- process heat
- solar cooling.
Solar thermal systems for commercial and industrial applications are more complex than domestic solar hot water systems. These systems require comprehensive design and to be installed for optimal performance.
Sustainability Victoria and the Master Plumbers' and Mechanical Services Association of Australia (MPMSAA) have jointly produced the Large Scale Solar Thermal Systems Design Handbook to support the design of best practice large scale solar thermal systems.
This handbook provides guidance in designing best practice large scale solar thermal systems. It also addresses common design issues including:
- flow rates
- hydraulic configuration
- control system
- collector arrangement.
The handbook provides an overview of the technical, design and installation related issues and use of large-scale solar thermal systems.
It covers commercial and industrial solar applications within the 60-120ºC temperature range excluding swimming pool applications.

Forum - Commercial solar heating and cooling
In November 2010, Sustainability Victoria invited international guest speaker Werner Weiss, Chairman of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Solar Heating and Cooling (SHC) Program to present at the Solar 2010 Conference in Canberra. While in Melbourne, Werner also presented at several Forums on Commercial Solar Heating and Cooling for the commercial and manufacturing industry.
