Recycled materials in pavement

Recycled crushed concrete, crushed brick, glass fines, Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and crumbed rubber products now commonly supplement traditional virgin aggregate and sand extracted from quarries in pavement construction.

The business case

The business case for councils to use local recycled products in pavement construction presents the competitiveness of local recycled products as a supplement to traditional quarry materials based on the dimensions of quality, price and availability. Recommendations for councils to procure local recycled products for pavement construction are also provided.

Technical advice

VicRoads is a national leader in the use of recycled products in pavement construction and provide a range of specifications and technical documentation to support the use of accredited recycled products from accredited suppliers.

Research

Swinburne University of Technology in partnership with VicRoads and Sustainability Victoria recently undertook research to investigate the use of recycled crushed glass and crushed brick as supplementary material in cement treated bound pavement applications. The results were a recommendation for up to 15% crushed glass or crushed brick to be incorporated as a supplementary material in cement treated crushed concrete pavement sub-base applications. VicRoads has endorsed these recommendations and updated their specifications accordingly.  Read more about the research findings in the reports below.
