Waste projection model

This projection model uses the total amount of waste recovered for recycling from SV's Victorian Recycling Industries Annual Survey (VRIAS) which provides State totals for the different material types recovered for reprocessing by source sectors. No regional break-ups are available for this dataset.

The second source of information is obtained directly from the EPA, providing the amount of material deposited at landfills. This information is by local government area and is aggregated to the waste region level for reporting.

The projection methodology is:

  • waste recycled is apportioned based on the population of each of the waste regions
  • waste landfilled is taken directly from the EPA dataset for each of the seven waste regions
  • future projections are undertaken for the regions based on the last known landfilled figure and projected into the future using population estimates.

How to refine the data

General

There are two filters on the dashboard, Year and Material Type – where Year refers to the start of a financial year, i.e. 2005 refers to 2005–06.

The map also works as a filter and you can select any of the waste Regions displayed on the map.

Hovering over any of the charts or Regions on the map will display details about the visuals, i.e. if you hover over the Actual and Projected Waste Quantities trend chart, data associated with a particular year will be displayed.

You can zoom in and out of the map by clicking on the magnifying glass symbols in the map or by scrolling on your mouse wheel.

If you have zoomed the image – you can move the map by clicking and holding down the left mouse key and moving the image.

The source sector of Municipal, C&I and C&D will also change based on any of the filter selections of Year, Material Type and Region (on map).

Instructions

  1. Select Region (on the map) The trend data chart for Actual and Projected Waste Quantities will be displayed based on the selection of Region. Selecting a highlighted Region will display the trend data for that Region and the top level results of Landfilled, Recovered, Waste Generation and Recovery Rate will be shown in the cards as well as the Source Sector details. To highlight all Regions, click / re-select a highlighted Region.
  2. Select Year The top level results for Landfilled, Recovered, Waste Generation and Recovery Rate are displayed in the cards based on the selection of Year. You can select more than one Year by holding down the Cntrl key and making multiple selections.
  3. Selecting More than one Region or Year You can select more than one Region or Year by holding down the Cntrl key and making multiple selections. The associated trend chart and top level results / cards will change based on your selection.
  4. Select Material Type The top level results for Landfilled, Recovered, Waste Generation and Recovery Rate are displayed in the cards based on the selection of Material Type.
