Success in last year’s Premier’s Sustainability Awards is paying off for Nightingale Housing, a not-for-profit program that offers a new vision for residential developments and city living.
It’s received a $50,000 grant and $50,000 loan to develop its design approach and advance its mission to build more sustainable housing and better communities.
The Nightingale Model shows how sustainability and affordability are compatible.
The latest venture - Nightingale Village - will have seven separate apartment blocks designed by different architects in a single precinct providing significant urban renewal.
The projects have no car parking, communal facilities to reduce maintenance costs, rooftop gardens and laundromats to encourage interaction among residents.
More than 3,500 people have indicated an interest in this model as potential purchasers.
Resident of the existing ‘Commons’ development Trent Kusters, says, for him it’s about convenience.
“I use public transport; the station is right there. Having a car in the city is not a convenient thing. I have friends who’ve had to move out to places like Dromana, Drouin and Officer just to get a place that’s comfortable to live in and very cheap.”
Nightingale Housing Managing Director Jeremy McLeod is thrilled to win the Sustainability Victoria grant.
“This will allow us to capture the ground-breaking sustainability initiatives in Nightingale 1, and use them to improve environmental sustainability in housing across Melbourne, specifically in our upcoming project, Nightingale Village.”
The new Nightingale project is being supported through Sustainability Victoria’s Social Impact Investment for Sustainability Program. Applications are now open.
